MDBC / EUMCCI: EU-Malaysia Trade & Investment Forum 2019

April 16 @ 9:00 am - 2:30 pm

Dear MDBC members,

The EU – Malaysia Chamber of Commerce & Industry (EUMCCI) is organizing its annual Trade & Investment Forum 2019 on Tuesday, 16 April at Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur.

Economic indicators show that the world economy will slow down in 2019.  At the moment, the world is still experiencing an upswing economic cycle but many believe we are hitting the growth peak.  Apart from cyclical predictive modeling, other factors may contribute to worsening the slowdown, such as the enduring of the US-China trade war, the stagnation of the EU, and the slower growth of the Chinese economy.

In a heavily interconnected world, global trends have implications on regional ones.  Even if ASEAN is enjoying the highest growth rates in the world, this region will not be immune to the consequences of this predicted “slowbalisation”.  The region may be affected indirectly due to the interdependence of supply chains with China and the flows of trade between the latter and ASEAN.  Nevertheless, there may be opportunities for short term wins, like factories moving out from China and setting up in Southeast Asia.

The Trade & Investment Forum 2019 aims to contribute to this discussion by providing a high level dialogue opportunity for the business community to meet Malaysian policymakers and government representatives.  Like every year, this important occasion will see EUMCCI’s Sector Committees launching their joint Position Paper “Trade Issues and Recommendations” and formally presenting it to our guest of honor, YB Datuk Ignatius Darell Leiking (Minister of International Trade & Industry).

VIP Luncheon with Rafizi Ramli

Expectations were high after the watershed 14th General Elections.  As Malaysia embarked on 2019, it was increasingly clear that moving the country forward and keeping it together while carrying out promised reforms may be more challenging than expected.  Join the VIP Luncheon with Rafizi Ramli to find out more on what the government is doing to address the challenges involved in injecting new dynamism into the private sector and take a close to RM 1 trillion debt to a manageable level.  Find out what they need from other parties, particularly in the business community, to ensure that reforms are done well and the country prospers.
