In this session, Emer Borger will present insights from his PhD research on Dutch Corporate Responses to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.  Drawing on an in – depth analysis of Dutch companies, the presentation (anonymously) examines how businesses respond when geopolitical shocks translate into legal, moral, reputational, and strategic pressures.

While the Russia – Ukraine war serves as the major case study, the session will place these findings in a broader global and Asian context.  The presentation will highlight how companies balance moral considerations and strategic interests when operating under geopolitical pressure, and will conclude with an interactive discussion on how businesses and governments can navigate geopolitical risk moving forward, with a particular relevance for the Asian region.

Emer is currently in the final stage of completing his PhD. Prior to beginning his doctoral research, he worked for nearly 15 years in military, law enforcement, and security roles within the Dutch government. After leaving public service, he joined Deloitte, where he served as a manager in financial advisory, before transitioning into academia.
