Leonardo and Weststar Aviation Group have signed an agreement to deliver a mix of helicopters for the Malaysian Armed Forces.

Revealed at an aerospace and maritime exhibit in Langkawi, the “sale and purchase” framework will cover supply for up to 28 rotary-wing aircraft, with some to be distributed to Kuala Lumpur’s other government agencies.

The package will be in different “orders and options,” and include in-country support and training services for the fleet’s respective operators.

Leonardo noted that the agreement allows the delivery of its proven AW149 medium – lift multirole helicopter to the Royal Malaysian Air Force and the Royal Malaysian Army for combat search and rescue tasks.

Additional aircraft for other agencies will consist of systems that can perform law enforcement, transport, disaster relief, firefighting, and homeland security missions.

Shipment will run from 2026 to 2027.

Bolstering Local Industry
Throughout the program, the incoming fleet will be supported by Leonardo’s Helicopter Training Academy in Malaysia and the future integration of local full-flight simulators and interactive trainers for aircrew students.

The company also plans to expand its maintenance, repair, and overhaul infrastructure for electronic components, mission systems, and rotor blade upkeep, further enhancing the Southeast Asian country’s role as one of Leonardo’s international support hubs.

“This latest initiative builds on the solid presence and the investments made over many years by Leonardo in the country, demonstrating we can be a reliable partner for key security and life-saving objectives, as well as the local economy and employment opportunities,” Leonardo Helicopters Managing Director Gian Piero Cutillo stated.

“Proximity, Innovation, and professional skills are key drivers of success. Thus, Malaysia continues to be a critical hub for us to serve the country and the greater region, and we’re committed to staying beside its Authorities to ensure our technology and services perform at their very best.”
