Netherlands to Repurpose Train Cars for Battlefield Medical Use

The Dutch Ministry of Defence is negotiating the procurement of decommissioned train cars to convert them into mobile platforms for wounded troop transport.

Amsterdam’s initiative covers 24 old coaches to be sourced from state-owned railway operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), according to local news agency Algemeen Dagblad.

Conversion of the rail cars is planned to be completed by 2026, with the number of systems expected to increase depending on the military’s requirements.

NS verified the discussions to supply the platforms for the Dutch Armed Forces, with progress now on a research phase.

The company explained that the package for this effort will eventually be replaced by new cars and was initially set for dispatch to export sales.

“The Ministry of Defence has contacted us, and we are looking into ways to assist them,” NS said. “We are always willing to do so.”

Enhancing Logistics Network
Amsterdam said that the project is part of the NATO member’s broader program to expand its logistics capabilities in response to the “current threat in the world.”

Alongside the rail car initiative, the country is working on other “strategic collaborations” with the “dozens” of companies in the transport sector to expand associated solutions.

Throughout its implementation, the program will focus on mobility platforms, storage, transshipment, and facility services.
