The Netherlands Rises to 8th in IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2026

The Netherlands’ secures top – five scores for societal framework (4th), international trade (4th), institutional framework (5th) and technological infrastructure (5th).

The Netherlands has been ranked 8th in the 2026 IMD World Competitiveness Ranking, rising two places from 2025 and reaffirming its position among the world’s most competitive economies. Published annually by the IMD World Competitiveness Center, the ranking assesses 70 economies on how effectively they create and sustain long- term value for businesses, people and society. The results are based on a survey of 6,900 global senior executives as well as economic data.

Predictability and trusted institutions provide competitive advantage
This year’s results highlight the growing importance of credible institutions, resilience and adaptability in a more volatile global economy. According to the IMD, economies with strong, trusted institutions are better placed to absorb economic shocks, provide predictable conditions for business and maintain confidence as geopolitical and trade dynamics shift.

The Netherlands secured top 5 positions in a number of categories. It came 4th for international trade, reflecting its connectivity to European and global markets, and its 5th – place ranking for technological infrastructure underscores the digital capabilities that support data – driven, high – value business activity. Combined with a strong institutional framework score (5th place) and a high – quality societal framework (also 5th), these factors make the Netherlands a stable and connected base for companies looking to expand, innovate and build long- term resilience.
