Netherlands Is Giving Its Future Frigates a 12-Meter Drone Boat Wingman

Netherlands’ future frigates use a 12 – meter USV to detect submarines at depths up to 750 meters.

The Royal Netherlands Navy is equipping its future anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigates with a new un – crewed surface vessel (USV) designed to detect and track enemy submarines in contested waters.

The 12 – meter (39 – foot) drone boat will carry Thales’ Compact FLASH dipping sonar, which can operate at depths of up to 750 meters (2,461 feet).

Using a low – frequency band and broadband architecture, the sonar enables long – range submarine detection while distinguishing targets from underwater acoustic clutter.

The system also integrates with the BlueTracker sonobuoy processing tech for expanded coverage and features automated deployment and recovery capabilities for rapid repositioning.

Once deployed, the USV will operate as a forward sensor platform in areas with heightened submarine activity, helping frigates maintain awareness of the underwater environment.

“USVs are set to play a major role in future anti-submarine warfare,” the company stated. “With uncrewed vessels, the new ASW frigates extend their range and improve their responsiveness. This strengthens the operational capability of the maritime forces.”

Design Phase Begins
The Netherlands Ministry of Defence has authorized Dutch Naval Design (DND) to begin designing the USV while finalizing procurement of the Thales Compact FLASH dipping sonar.

DND is a partnership linking government, industry, academia, and research institutions.

The USV’s design phase is expected to conclude in early 2027.
