Malaysia’s Economic Challenges

December 1 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Dear MDBC members,

The global economic and political landscape has changed in recent years.  Malaysian businesses encounter not only domestic competition and rising costs brought about by geopolitical competition with heightened tariffs by the superpowers, but they also face an influx of competitors from China utilizing their overcapacity in manufacturing to penetrate the Malaysian market.

Are Malaysia’s economic, education, trade, and investment policies adequate to meet these challenges?

The objective of this conference is to bring together industry captains and economic experts for an open discussion of the problems confronting the Malaysian economy and propose viable solutions to these issues.

Date: Tuesday, 1 December
Time: 09:00 – 15:00 hrs
Venue: Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH)
Fees: Normal: RM 130 / pax.  Group: RM 100 / pax for groups of two or more.

Key takeaways for business owners, professionals, and concerned Malaysians – Real issues affecting Malaysia’s economic growth:

– Wage suppression and the cheap – labour model;
– Difficulty hiring and retaining top talent;
– A weak currency raising the cost of imported inputs and technology;
– Low – productivity, low – investment equilibrium in many sectors;
– Compliance and policy uncertainty

To address these problems, the following core issues will be discussed (Based on the discussion at the forum, solutions collectively taken by the participating business chambers will be tabled to MITI for consideration):

– Malaysia’s R&D ranking and its ability to climb up the value added chain;
– Governance, rent – seeking, and institutional trust;
– Dependence on low – wage foreign labour versus automation and upskilling;
