Dutch Navy Adds Hornet B2 to Counter – Drone Arsenal

The Dutch Navy is moving to integrate Destinus’ Hornet B2 interceptor into its fleet as the Netherlands responds to a growing threat from drones at sea.

The Netherlands Ministry of Defence (MoD)’s Materiel and IT Command has contracted Destinus to develop a naval version of its Hornet B2 counter – drone system, including integration with several Royal Netherlands Navy warships and logistics support, with an initial operating capability targeted for the second quarter of 2027.

Navy personnel will participate throughout the development program, helping define requirements, and evaluate the system in a maritime environment.

The MoD said the navy needs additional defenses as the threat from medium – range drones increases, citing operational analyses and current maritime threat assessments. This new interceptor is intended to complement existing weapons and help ships defend themselves and allied vessels.

“By converting a land – based C – UAS into a variant for operational deployment at sea, defense is taking a step forward,” the Dutch ministry said.

The Hornet B2 is designed as an additional interceptor layer for aerial threats that may not justify the use of expensive shipborne air – defense missiles.

It is stored in a sealed canister and launched using a rocket booster before deploying folding wings and switching to electric-powered cruise flight. The company describes the design as combining the launch readiness of a missile with the range and endurance of an aircraft.

For target detection and engagement, the Hornet B2 uses electro – optical and infrared sensing, with AI – based processing supporting the terminal phase.

Human operators retain control over engagement decisions under applicable rules of engagement, Destinus said.
