The Dutch Ministry of Defence has opened a new innovation center at TU Delft aimed at speeding the development of military technologies by bringing together defense officials, start – ups, and researchers under one roof.
The new MIND Tech Centre, short for Military Innovation by Doing, will focus on dual – use technologies such as drones, quantum computing, sensors, space systems, smart materials, and digital systems that have both civilian and military applications.
Dutch State Secretary for Defence Derk Boswijk described the facility as a way to shorten the time needed to move new technologies from concept to military use.
It is also intended to provide startups and small and medium-sized enterprises with a secure environment to test and develop technologies alongside defense users.
The center is a joint initiative between the Ministry of Defence, TU Delft, and the Province of South Holland. The province is contributing one million euros ($1.1 million) to the project, with part of the funding coming from the European Union.
Expanding University Partnerships for Defense
The Dutch initiative reflects a broader trend of governments and firms working directly with universities to accelerate defense innovation.
In May, South Korean AI firm Dnotitia teamed with Changshin University to develop defense – focused AI talent through hands-on training, cloud computing, data skills, and industry – linked projects.
That same month, XRDNA and the University of Utah launched a multi-year research partnership covering defense, aerospace, sensing, and digital infrastructure technologies.
Earlier, in March, Saab and the Kyiv School of Economics began a strategic collaboration on research into unmanned aerial systems and microelectronics.
Also in March, Common Mission Project UK partnered with the University of the Bundeswehr Munich to launch the Hacking for Defense academic program in Germany, giving master’s students the opportunity to tackle real-world cybersecurity challenges in collaboration with the defense sector.
